When Is Peak Fall Color Near Pisgah Forest? A Week-by-Week Guide

Fall color near Pisgah Forest has about six peak dates, one for each thousand feet of elevation. The high ground above 5,000 feet turns first, in late September and the first week of October. The Blue Ridge Parkway follows in the first half of October. The valley around Brevard comes last, in the final ten days of October. If you know that, you can find good color on almost any weekend for five straight weeks. You just have to drive to the right elevation.

This guide walks the season week by week, with drive times from the house. Actual timing shifts with the weather. A warm September pushes everything back a few days, and a hard frost speeds it up.

When does fall color start in Pisgah National Forest?

Late September. The first color shows up on the highest ridges, above 5,000 feet, where the nights get cold first. As of the third week of September this year, the Asheville area color report still had Graveyard Fields mostly green, with the best of the season ahead. That is normal. The high country usually reaches its best in the first week or so of October.

From there the color walks downhill. The rule of thumb from the foresters is roughly a thousand feet of elevation every week to ten days. So a ridge and the valley below it can be two full weeks apart, even when they are ten miles from each other.

Where is the color in late September and the first week of October?

Up high, on the Parkway. Two of the earliest spots in the whole region are less than an hour from the house.

Graveyard Fields sits at Milepost 418.8, about 50 minutes from the house. The valley floor is over 5,000 feet, and it is one of the first places on the entire Parkway to turn. Black Balsam Knob is at Milepost 420.2, about 55 minutes away. The summit is 6,214 feet and treeless, so you are not looking at leaves under your feet. You are looking out at a full 360 degrees of ridges, with the color moving down the slopes below you. The summit walk is about 1.5 miles round trip. Bring a real jacket. Where is the color in mid-October?

On the Parkway itself, between 4,000 and 5,000 feet. This is the classic window, and it is the week most people picture when they think of fall in these mountains. The Parkway entrance at Wagon Road Gap is about 40 minutes from the house. From there you can drive north toward Mount Pisgah or south past Graveyard Fields and Devils Courthouse, and the overlooks carry color in every direction.

One honest note. The Parkway closes in sections for weather and repairs, and cold weather reaches the top first. Check the Parkway road status the morning you go.

When do the waterfalls have fall color?

Around the third week of October. The waterfalls along US 276 sit in the 3,000 to 4,000 foot band, which usually peaks about October 16 to 23.

When does Brevard and the valley peak?

The last ten days of October. The valley around Brevard sits between 2,000 and 3,000 feet, and most forecasts put its peak around October 20 to 31. DuPont State Forest peaks in the same window. So if you booked late October and worried you missed it, you did not. You are here for the end of the show, and the end is the part you can see from town.

What should you bring for a fall color drive?

• A rain layer and a warm layer. Up high it runs a lot colder than Brevard, and the wind on the balds is real.
• A full tank. There is no gas on the Parkway.
• An offline map. Cell service dies as soon as you climb.
• Water and a real lunch. Restrooms and trash cans are rare at Parkway trailheads. Graveyard Fields is the exception.
• A second stop in mind. When one lot is full, the next overlook is a few miles down the road.
• Real shoes. Even the short trails get rocky and slick near the falls.

How do you avoid the crowds?

Go early, go midweek, or go to the elevation the crowds are not thinking about. Most visitors chase whatever peaked last weekend. If the Parkway is packed in mid-October, the valley waterfalls are quiet and still green at the edges. If the valley is crowded in late October, the high balds are past peak and nearly empty, and the view from Black Balsam is just as big.

Start early. The Graveyard Fields lot is quiet at sunrise and full by mid-morning.

Most places around Pisgah give you a bed and a map. This one is built for what happens after the miles.
