What Can You Do With Kids Near Pisgah Forest in October? A Family Fall Weekend Plan
October 13, 2026

Short waterfall walks, a free downtown Halloween festival, and a fire pit at the end of the day. A two-day plan for a family fall weekend near Pisgah Forest.
October is one of the best months to bring kids to Pisgah Forest. The best family stops are short: a roadside waterfall you see from a deck, an easy walk to a falls you can almost stand behind, and a wide, low waterfall in DuPont a quarter mile from the car. Add a pumpkin trail or a downtown Halloween festival in Brevard, and you have a full weekend with no long hikes and no tired meltdowns on the trail.
Below is a two-day plan, and what is closed right now, so you skip the locked gates.
What should you check before you go this week?
The remnants of Hurricane Isaias soaked the mountains this past weekend, with a flood watch over Transylvania County through Sunday. Three things change because of it.
- The waterfalls are running full. That makes them louder and better to look at, and more dangerous up close. Keep kids on the decks and trails, and stay back from the base of any falls while the creeks are high.
- Some Forest Service sites closed for the storm. The Pisgah Visitor Center and the Cradle of Forestry closed ahead of Isaias. Check the Forest Service alerts page for Pisgah before you plan a stop at either one.
- The Blue Ridge Parkway is open near Pisgah, for now. As of Monday morning, the National Park Service listed the Parkway open from the Pisgah Inn area past US 276 to NC 215, with the stretch beyond NC 215 closed for weather. That status changes daily, so look it up the morning you go.
What is the easiest waterfall for little kids?
Looking Glass Falls, 23 minutes from the house. It drops 60 feet in one clean plunge, and you see the whole thing from a viewing deck right off US 276. No hike, no boots, no fee. Fifteen or twenty minutes is plenty for the deck.
There is a stairway down to the creek, but it is steeper, and the rock near the water stays wet and slick. With high water after this weekend’s rain, the deck is the place to be with small kids. The lot is small and fills by mid-morning on nice fall weekends, so make it your first stop.
What is a good first hike for kids?
Moore Cove Falls, about a mile past Looking Glass Falls and 26 minutes from the house. It is an easy 0.7-mile walk each way through the forest, about fifteen or twenty minutes each way at an easy pace. It starts across a wooden footbridge and ends at a 50-foot falls that pours over a wide, cave-like overhang.
Kids will want to walk behind the curtain of water. The Forest Service asks visitors to stay on the observation deck, and the rock back there is where people get hurt. Hold the line at the deck. Two more things: there are no restrooms at the trailhead, and the trail gets muddy in a few low spots after rain. This week it will be muddy.
Is DuPont State Forest good for kids?
Yes, and it is the closest of the three, 12 minutes from the house. The Triple Falls guide covers the full walk. For young kids, start with Hooker Falls, an easy quarter-mile walk to a wide, low falls about 12 feet tall. There are restrooms at the access areas, which matters with kids.

Older kids can keep going. All three falls make a 2.2-mile round trip with one short, steep pitch up to Triple Falls. The stairway to the middle rock shelf at Triple Falls has been closed for Helene repairs, and there is no swimming at Triple Falls. DuPont asks families to arrive before 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m. for the best shot at parking.
Can kids still go down Sliding Rock in October?
Not really. Sliding Rock is a summer activity. Lifeguards are on duty only from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and sliding is not recommended the rest of the year. The water runs 50 to 60 degrees all year and runs higher after rain. Save it for a summer trip.
The other classic kid stop that is off the list this fall is the fish hatchery on the Davidson River. The state’s Bobby N. Setzer hatchery closed in late 2025 for a major renovation and is set to reopen at the end of 2027.
What fall events are there for kids in Brevard?
Two good ones this month.
- Pumpkin Fest at Silvermont. Lighted, carved pumpkin displays on a short walking trail at Silvermont Park in Brevard, with music, food trucks, and kids’ activities. It runs 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights through October 30. The organizers called off one night earlier this month for rain, so check before you go on a wet evening.
- Halloweenfest in downtown Brevard. Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is free, with a costume contest and parade, inflatables for kids, and trick-or-treating at downtown businesses from 1 to 2 p.m.
How should you plan the weekend?
Keep the mornings for the forest and the evenings for town or the fire pit.
- Saturday morning: Looking Glass Falls first, before the lot fills. Then Moore Cove Falls a mile up the road.
- Saturday afternoon: Back to the house for lunch and a slow hour in the fenced yard.
- Saturday night: Pumpkin Fest at Silvermont, then home to the fire pit.
- Sunday morning: Hooker Falls in DuPont, 12 minutes away. Add Triple Falls if the legs are good.
- Sunday afternoon: If the Parkway is open and the kids have one more drive in them, head up for the color. Peak color starts up high and moves downhill about 1,000 feet a week. Our week-by-week fall color guide and the Blue Ridge Parkway guide cover where to look.
Where to stay for a family fall weekend near Pisgah
Most places near Pisgah give you beds and a parking spot. This one is built for what happens after the miles are done, even when the miles are short ones with a five-year-old.

There are three king beds, so no one draws the air mattress. A second family room downstairs gives the kids their own space and the grown-ups some quiet. The backyard is fully fenced, the fire pit is ready for the firewood you bring, and the six-person hot tub is waiting when everyone is cold and muddy. One guest this summer wrote about making s’mores at the fire pit with the teenagers. A family this month called it the best place for their family to spend time together. The house holds a 4.87 rating from 15 Airbnb reviews.
Looking Glass Falls is 23 minutes away and DuPont is 12. If October is when your family can get away, check dates at Pisgah Base Camp.
